Your Rights Online: You need to know

Slashdot has posted an article stating that they have begun introducing advertising on some pages for free users. The interesting bit is that they have added something to their Terms Of Service(XVI 17 b.) forbidding Livejournal users from using ad-blocking software. They also reserve the right to ban the account of anyone caught doing so.

I have no intention of changing the way I view my Livejournal. If my account suddenly disappears...you'll know why.

Update: They fucked it up. Thanks for the tip, kshandra!

I read that differently.

My reading is that if you get a "sponsored account" you can't then re-code to elminate the ads from appearing. That would be against the spirit of the agreement.

Exactly. Sponsored+ accounts are the ONLY accounts that will see ads; neither free nor paid accounts will.

I guess I gave their lawyers too much credit.

Most of LJ is copy/paste happy - why not the lawyers too?

Gah. I liked my explanation better - now I actually think less of them than I did!
