Okay, wcg, You were right

Bill, I just finished Bujold's Memory, and you were right. The payoff was infinitely worth it.

Oddly enough, I did have my suspicions about Haroche when Illyan was in the hospital, but they fell away in the flock of red herrings that Bujold tossed at me.

Damn good book, indeed.

My very favorite scene in Memory is when Miles puts on all his medals with his Vorkosigan uniform. I can just see General Piotr looking over his shoulder and whispering, "You'll do boy. You'll do."

Yup. I got swimmies up and down my spine during that scene.

Better of Haroche to cut his own throat, than to go up against Miles Naismith Vorkosigan.

Yeah. Haroche could have asked Simon Illyan, who'd have told him that it's a bad idea to underestimate a Vorkosigan, even a twisted little runt of a Vorkosigan. But I don't suppose Haroche would have asked Simon for advice.

Miles is undoubtedly his parents' son, but he is also very much Piotr's grandson. The reason Piotr died in bed at the age of 92 was not because he avoided danger, but rather because he was more dangerous than all the people who tried to kill him. His grandson understands that, and absorbed the lesson.
