We've got a good sized crack in the ceiling with a very large and fast drip coming out of it. In nearly the same FUCKING spot it was dripping last time. About 8 inches from the original drip at the edge of the kitchen ceiling. Goddammit. I am not pleased at all. J was playing Quake 4 very loudly when I heard the sound, whereupon I abruptly commanded him to pause the game while I investigate. Sure enough, I was right. I put up my largest mixing bowl under it with a washcloth in it to try to minimize splash. Didn't work. drip was so fast there was serious splashback. So I get my tallest stock pot w/washcloth inside. That worked a little better, but still some splashback. So i've surrounded the edges of said stock pot with t-towels to try to contain it. I'm still not sure if it's getting all of the splashback, but I don't know what else I can do. :-( We're attempting to contact the Leasing Office now.

Bloody damn crapalicious building maintenance

Update: The maintenance people responded promptly and immediately went upstairs to the apt directly above to find out whatinhell they were doing. Turns out their sink was stopped up and they had been running their dishwasher. . It's gone now.

Best of luck getting your roof dealt with promptly. When I had roof leaks in Valley West, they gave me $100 to pay for water damage to books.

Quake 4? Hmm, I must check it out. I never bought Doom III because, impressive though the visuals appeared to be, I didn't relish the prospect of spending 80% of the game stumbling around in pitch darkness unable to simultaneously use my flashlight and a weapon. I don't much like the idea of the choice between "You can either see your target, or shoot at it, but not both."
C'mon, iD, it's set in, what, the 22nd century? DUCT TAPE was invented in the 20th, fer crissakes. You're going to tell me that even if no better option exists, a 22nd century Marine fighting deadly alien monsters in pitch fucking darkness with no night-vision gear isn't gonna duct-tape his flashlight to his weapon or his helmet?

You're in luck. In Quake 4, the pistol and machine gun have flashlight attachments, now. However, those are the only weapons with flashlights. It's somewhat better lit, too. J tells me there are Duct Tape mods for Doom III that allow you to attach flashlights to all your weapons and enlarge the light beam.

I must say, though, that Quake 4 ranks high on the Gruesome-O-Meter. Don't play it around the kids.

Ugh. Lovely. I'm glad that I've never dealt with a leak. Just the rent thing, the stopped garbage disposal, the neighbors with heart attacks and the FBI.

Anyway, it does sort of seem like they never really fixed the first problem, but after the explanation it might have been separate. You don't seem to get much luck with upstairs neighbors, huh?

luck with upstairs neighbors, lord NO! although to be honest, simple accident is a little easier to take than deliberate cruelty like that neighbor last year with his bloody dogs. although it looks like this neighbor has had entirely too many leaks for my comfort. twice in his kitchen and once from his A/C unit that resulted in a large damp patch above the computers in the spare bedroom. [chews fingernails nervously] what's going to be next one wonders.
