I won't hesitate to pay 8 bucks for a big thick Jacqueline Carey paperback. But I am Goddamned if I am going to pay another 8 bucks for a tiny damn paperback, I don't fucking care if it's Anne McCaffrey's latest. Fuck You Mr Book Publisher Man. Fuck You Very Much. Your punishment is I won't buy your horribly overpriced tiny little book. I will wait until I can borrow it from the library, and eventually buy it in a used bookshop. How you like dat, huh?

That is all.

Think of it this way - paperback prices have (for my lifetime at least) kept pace with the average cost of seeing a movie in theaters. If you'd pay $7.50 to see a movie, that's what the price of a paperback runs. When I was younger, like college age, paperbacks and movies ran $6 - $6.50 - this is pretty standard inflation rather than an industry-specific price increase. (Notice that movies have gotten twice as long too... for much the same reason. I don't like the super sizing of entertainment if it means 3 hours of crap rather than 90 minutes of treasure.)

I know we talked about this, but I just thought about the movie connection today.
